Common Mistakes Computerizing Welding Information

Hello Software Users,

My name is Nick Mossman and I’m a consultant engineer in welding and NDE. I look after the TWI software in the United States and I’m based in San Diego, CA.

I’m often contacted by companies who are thinking of computerizing their welding information, either just procedure and welder qualifications or wider production welding and NDE. Most of these people have seen that we sell software off-the-shelf and are evaluating us as an alternative.

Other options commonly considered include the engineer developing something using Excel/Word, etc. or having an internal IT Group develop something custom for them.

We’ve implemented lots of systems for customers since 1985 and we’ve seen the advantages and pitfalls of the different options. There are cost considerations (both short and long term), there are future-proofing issues to think of and there are quality issues (on both the software and the welding side) to think of.

I’ve written a short paper on this, which I’ve posted on TWI’s software web-site. This is for you if you’re currently looking at changing the way you look after your welding documentation.

Me or the team would be happy to discuss this with you if you have any questions or you just want to explore the options in more detail.
